I see signs like that all the time. Facility just want staff to make proper arrangement for people to be at work. I would try my best to get to work before a hurricane starts. If I live an hour a way and someone else lives closer you could probably swap. There is no way to prepare for being at work two days a hurricane is coming, especially when you work 11-7 the day before and the hurricane done hit 12:00pm. I have a life outside that facility as well. My responsibility is to keep myself safe and family. Now if inclement weather hit during my work hours that's a different story. You have to be accountable for people's lives due to someone who can't make it in and should have been there. It's always good to make prior arrangement even if you have to bring your family to the facility.

If you are working as an LPN see if your job does tuition reimbursement. On top of the accumulation of financial aid they have payment plans,your institution has scholarships which is free money. Some nurses go into the articulation Lon to Rn program and come out quicker with the AS degree.you can then get employed and go back to do your RN to BSN and there are plenty of workforce shortage scholarships that provide financial help in your state.

I think the first thing going into nursing is to enjoy the job and the different people whose lives you will touch. I see you said you don't want to go into pediatrics,sounds like a personal problem instead of someone who is passionate about helping others. Don't knock it until you have tried it.To grow and become skillful and successful as a nurse is to open your heart to the needs of others. Anyway to answer your question it does matter where you work because much is based on how much skills you have upon experience.Geriatric,you should be working in a Long term care facility,to add skills such as specialty like cardiac,spinal you should be working and gaining knowledge from a hospital on Telemetry etc..Most of specialty units require you have skills from LTC.So you do learn the basics of nursing from LTC then advance to hospital because it's hard to get employed fresh out of school with no back bone.
