Professional Growth

I have called a few hospitals to find out where I may want to work. One of the largest employers of nurses in the St. Louis area does not care about professional growth. "All nurses are seen as the same", per the nurse recruiter at BJC. They, as you all know, are a magnet hospital, and only have/want the best nurses. Humm-- I always thought education with experience carved out some of the best nurses.

I did find quite a few places that do value professional growth, and their nurses.

I believe you on this one it is a huge hospital to begin with and you are just a nurse. Its kinda like going to a huge university than a middle or small college. You are just a number to them. Its not the wonderful floors or nursing that got that Magnet status or at least when I was working there. Most likely certian units were looked at.

I don't believe magnet hospitals are the "best" for nurses. When it comes to hospital politics, nurses really have to look before they leap into anything. As a military nurse there was lots of politics, but of a different kind. Civilian nurses are in some sort of sick battle against money, mediocrity, apathy, and twisted pride. The book "Nursing Against the Odds" really spelled it out well. To bad for the patients that find themselves caught up in this mess, it has cost many patients their lives. I can cleary see why nurses find other professions. I wish I had never left the military.
