Probiotic protocols in your NICU

Published

I am trying to institute the use of probiotics in our FL NICU. Since the topic is so controversial, our Neo's want a list of other hospitals in the United States that use them. Has anyone worked in a NICU that uses probiotics? If so, which kind do you use and what is your protocol?

I work with one of the top nutritionists in the preemie world, and she isn't a huge advocate. Breastmilk is the best thing for the gut and colonization of the good bacteria. I believe part of it is the actual dosing. There has also been a link to sepsis with their use. There was a thread this past summer on this topic. Good luck!

I'm in Utah. Our Neo's use lactobacillus if we have a neonate on antibiotics. Our order is usually for 1/2 a cap mixed in roughly 2-3ml EBM.
