the ana presented the handle with care campaign, a national initiative focused on the prevention of back injuries and other musculoskeletal disorders among nurses, at the annual national meeting of the association of occupational health professionals in healthcare (aohp) in tampa, fl on october 9, 2004.

5th annual safe patient handling and movement conference

february 28 to march 4, 2005

this conference will provide participants with lessons learned, best practices and cutting edge research findings related to safe patient handling and movement. both general and concurrent program sessions will be offered. participants may select presentations from concurrent focus sessions including technology, facility based education strategies, organizational strategies and cost/benefits related to no-lift programs. detailed conference materials will include cognitive aids and tools to facilitate implementation of best practices.

no-lift programs should be part of all healthcare facilities best practices. if you facility is having a high rate of back injuries, i suggest they send someone to this conference!!!

the handle with care campaign seeks to mount a profession-wide effort to prevent back and other musculoskeletal injuries through greater education and training, and increased use of assistive equipment and patient-handling devices. the campaign also seeks to reshape nursing education, and federal and state ergonomics policy by highlighting the ways technology-oriented safe-patient handling benefits patients and the nursing workforce.
