Preceptorships?

So I know all NY nursing programs are different so everyone might have a different answer but how exactly do preceptorships work? I know they're usually in the last semester of senior year but does the school set them up or do you just find your own?

Our school:

There is a clinical coordinator who coordinates with Nurse Educators (IIRC) at the different hospitals. We do it in the last semester (yea!) and we fill out a form in which we:

a. rate out location preference (for ex. Brooklyn 1st choice, Queens 2nd choice, etc)

b. rate our 2 specialty preferences (for ex, med surg 1st choice, ER 2nd choice)
