Preceptorship

Hey everyone,

I will be graduating this May with a BSN and I will start my precepting in March. Right now, the clinical coordinator is assigning preceptors for us seniors graduating in May.

I was just wondering how much does the preceptorship weigh on job placement (in certain units) after graduating, or just landing a job in general?

Thanks,

Brian

Yes and no. I did ED for my preceptorship because I liked the fast pace atmosphere, however the hospital I did my clinicals at was on a hiring freeze and rarely took any new nurses into the ED anyway so no dice. HOWEVER, I later did get a job in a critical care area that liked my specialty preceptorship (as opposed to med-surg, peds or OB) and hired me. So it just depends.

Thank you!

I am in the same place as you, graduating in May and going into my preceptorship, so I'm no expert here. But I'll tell you the various things I'm hearing in the local grapevine.

My professors have all basically said to do your preceptorship in med/surg to everyone who talks about a specialty unit. They say it makes you more likely to find a job. Now, I'm seeing a variety of results from people in the class above us. Not a lot of people got hired into the units where they precepted.

That said, the NM on the unit where I want to be (mother/baby) was the NM on med/surg when we did clinicals there. She likes me, and said that if I was able to land a preceptorship there (since I'd already been assigned to med/surg at another hospital), that she'd help me out, and hinted that she's known to hire new grads. So my fingers are crossed that this is the job lead it appears to be. We'll see!

I think this is something that will really vary by your location, and you certainly can't hurt anything by showing them what you have to offer.
