Pre-Reqs

I just accepted a position in ICU after working Med/Surg for three years so I am very excited to take the first step to being a SRNA.

Here is my problem, every school I have looked into requires you to apply to the Anesthesia Program first (usually located at the hospital) and then apply to the affiliate University. Obviously I am not ready to apply to anesthesia school yet because I don't have the ICU experience needed. However....I wanted to take the core courses needed, starting in January, to lessen the load once I do get accepted into a program. How do I go about doing this..any ideas?

The schools that I have applied to require you to apply to the affiliated university at the same time or before applying to the anesthesia school. I am hoping to knock off some of the MSN classes before starting whichever program I get accepted to (if I get accepted). Anyway, you should have no problem applying to and being accepted to the affiliated university so you can take some of the prereqs. I have known many people who have taken that route. Also, if you've busted a couple of A's out in graduate level coursework, it looks good on your anesthesia school app. Good luck in your new ICU position!

This came up when I was applying. The hospital was very impressed in the interview that I had already been accepted to the university part of the program. Might want to try it that way for the added bonus points.

Every program I have looked into will only let you be accepted into the Anesthesia track after you are admitted to the School of Anesthesia. So I am unsure how I could begin taking pre-reqs.

The way my school does it is a "provisional acceptance" - and they let you take the core MSN classes ahead of time. Talk to your school and see if they have something like that.

The schools that I am interested in said I could take a Biochemistry course just to see how I do in it. But as far as the other courses, you must be registered. I have applied for Fall 2007.
