i am a rn div 1 from the us, and now living in melbourne. i have recently applied for a position at a general practice clinic, and i am trying to get a 'feel' for the attitude towards practice nurses in au.
it seems that there are not many positions available at clinics, and i would like to hear from someone that is currently doing this type of nursing in au.
thanks!

Hi, I work as a Practice nurse about 2 hours from Melbourne.
The pay is usually alot lower than that of the hospitals unless your employer pays above the award. Mine dosen't, only reason I stay is I am practically my own boss, save the other 2 of us, 2 mins from home(save petrol) great hours, kid friendly and I really dislike working in our local hospital.....flat out every shift, just too old to begin that sort of thing...and the politics, hope to begin Diabetes education soon.
The Nurses at our local hospital are great when I do bank shifts there, always willing to show me, but they do think us Practice nurses are for nearly retirees and have downskilled alot....thats just my impression. C

I'd agree with this comment. And I can see why many would have this opinion. Several practice nurses I've met are at the tail end of their career and wanting something less physically demanding etc etc.
