Portage learning?

It can be so stressful trying to figure out which prerequisites will actually transfer when you are staring down a nursing school application deadline.

Portage Learning is widely used because it is accredited through Geneva College, but Georgia schools can be particularly picky about online lab components. Many programs in the Atlanta area require "wet labs" or in-person science credits, so you have to be careful before paying for a course.

Based on what I have seen in the local nursing community, here are a few ways to verify your credits:

• Check the Georgia State Transfer Equivalency: Schools like Georgia State University and Kennesaw State often have searchable databases. Look for "Geneva College" rather than "Portage" to see how those credits have mapped for previous students.
• Email the Admissions Counselor: Send a copy of the Portage syllabus to the nursing department at Emory or Mercer. Ask specifically if they accept virtual labs for Anatomy and Microbiology, as this is usually the main sticking point.
• Look at Technical Colleges: If you are looking at ADN programs in the metro area, many of them are more flexible with Portage credits as long as the regional accreditation matches their requirements.

I always recommend getting the approval in writing via email before you start the class. It saves so much heartache during the final transcript evaluation.
