PLEASE don't do it!

We have lost MANY nurses to this behavior. In Texas the nurse can be filed on with criminal charges, listed as a sex offender from now on, and lose his/her nursing license.

I'm sorry, but I worked my butt off in nursing school and NEVER want to be listed as a sex offender or lose my nursing license. And I certainly don't want to ever do time with the female inmates I have seen!

Hope you can convince her. You may check into the nurse practice act for your state and see if she could have similar consequences there.

Hi fellow correctional nurse's. I'm having a hard time convincing a coworker of mine to stop making contact with an inmate. I've tried to explain to her that they can be manipulative and that she can lose her job. She said she came to me about it because she "heard" that I did it and kept my job

The truth is that my husband had been arrested around the same time I started and I had to inform the administrator so that I could be move to another facility and she refused to move me because she needed me on the shift I was on. He was there for 3 days and somehow it was said that I met him there (funny how we were able to get married in jail within that time frame-WHATEVER!).

Anyway, if you know any situations gone wrong please post so that i may refer her here.

Dumb Girl!!!

It is a dumb move. Georgia doesn't have the same consequences I don't think. Normally, the facility "walks you out" and you're blacklisted from most corrctional facilities in that region.

There was a psychologist that has been featured on 20/20..she had a PhD, and is now working as an auto-mechanic because she got sexually involved with a death-row inmate and used her "counseling" time for meetings and sexual encounters.

Her lover was a famous serial killer...can anyone think of her name or has seen her? She had long black hair.

We had a nurse get escorted out in cuffs due to an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. When it was all said and done, she was convicted of a felony, and also lost her nursing license.

The correctional system is full of charming master manipulators. The inmates are watching every little move you do, and listening to every word you say- then they have hours and hours to figure out how to use it to their advantage. You need to warn your "friend" that she is two steps away from losing her nursing license and gaining a criminal record. I'm sure her special inmate is bragging to all the guys in the dorm- and some of them are jealous of his status-so it's just a matter of time before someone notifies the administration so they can obtain some bonus points.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr why don't we get better training on this????? There is a great book out called: The games criminals play...........you can get it at amazon..........it gives a great lookee see into how they think and run their cons..........recommend it for your friend

Wow ... how does this happen? I'm sure these guys are expert manipulators but, how does a nurse end up throwing it all away for these guys? They don't think about their license or their job?

And, I wonder if they regret it after they lose everything.

It actually happens alot. I don't know what to say about where there mindset is. It's just a need for love or belonging. I guess what I'm saying is that there is some psychological issues going on. It's not worth it. She's resorting to calling him down for sick call to check his B/P and she had her nails manicured to spell his name out. She is putting money on his books and buying his family gifts and now he's been transferred from jail to prison (in another city) and is on his visitation list.

It's just a need for love or belonging.

Yeah, but there are so many available men on the outside who won't cost you your entire career. Why risk it all for an inmate? Maybe they have some deep need for punishment, or something like that.

BTW ... do most of these nurses lose their licenses or, do they also end up in jail?

Just going to play amateur shrink for a minute here... I've never worked in corrections, so this is all speculation...

I'd guess it happens in roughly the same ratio as women who make bad choices when it comes to choosing their mates in general. It may be that the nurse is often the only person in the entire facility that the prisoners believe aren't judging them, and add on to that the care provided probably passes for feeling as if they are being nurtured (which they are, compared to the way so many are treated by guards and fellow prisoners). So the prisoners grow genuinely fond of the nurse and the vulnerable nurse may interpret that as the devotion she feels she's missing in her outside relationship.

If you're dead set on getting into a bad relationship then, there's plenty of options with that on the outside as well ... without having to lose your license and career with an inmate.

I guess I just don't understand it. I mean ... you're ruining your whole life for a criminal. It's strange, to say the least.

It happens not just to nurses in prisons, it also happens to guards, chapelancy staff, etc. Mercy, you are right, in that the nurse gets lots of warm fuzzies from the inmate, and it must feel like love. But the only two that I have actually known personally were jailed, lost their license, wrecked their future, and one ended up killing herself.
