the hospital I am working in, out here in the middle east is trying to go paperless, they are creating the system "in-house" I am in the process of gather required information to appear in each screen! for example on a "pre-op" check list, even this one task is leading me to bang my head against a brick wall as each doctor like their previous hospitals pre-op check list...it really is a headache, there are VERY limited places or people to go to for help so I am hoping that some one here will be able to point me in the right direction with standarized information for screens which is JCIA approved.
With the expection of myself and three other nurses no one has any idea what it is like to work in a hospital outside of the third world!!! arrh I am going bald pulling my hair out, and i have only been here 3 months....GOD I MISS HOME:( . But on a good note the weather is great as is the scuba diving :chuckle
I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM SOME ONE---ANYONE!!!

Hi saudismith,
I'm so sorry you are having trouble. If it helps you are on the right track!!! - "standardization" is the only way to go. Have you contacted AORN (the Association of Perioperative Registered Nures)? at: http://www.aorn.org/
Let me know if you need more assitance.

Saudismith,
Sounds like a once in a lifetime experience!
Please, when you have more time write back and give us more details about daily life over there, the differences in clinical practice and what your role as a Nurse Informaticist involves there.
Stay positive and know that we are rooting for you. I know that the project will be a success - after all they have a nurse on the job!!!

SaudiSmith, I feel ya. My bride and I spent a year in the Magic Kingdom2001-2002(yes, we were in Jeddah on 9/11). Loved the SCUBA, and shopping in Balad. If your hospital is KFSH I was there. The MD's were at that time mainly Canadians, with a Scot and an Aussie, and rarely an American. The "Saudization" of their medical and nursing staff scared hell out of me..you never knew when prayer time would leave you shortstaffed for an hour while they let you perform the work that ENSHA'ALLAH would be done, or work a code for 2 hours because a good muslim wouldn't declare another dead, stopping only when a western MD was given the helm so to speak.
Your best option in my opinion is to remind everyone that change is THE only constant, this is the system the powers that be have adopted, and that thier contract is up in X months, then they can get back to their beloved procedures. Until then, this is what we have, it's our job to give it the fulltilt boogie backup administration expects.
What ever paperless system they've bought, it has pros and cons, but is being used elsewhere in the world. Maybe you can find out where else that it's being used and seek input(not unlike you've done here)as to how to encourage compliance without complaint!
