Hello,

I am starting the nursing program this September at OCC and just found out that I need to get my Hep-b vaccination and a TB test. My concern is that I do not have health insurance. Can anyone recommend a place that offers free shots and TB testing? I live in Oakland county.

Any help is much appreciated!!!!

I work in a doctors office. TB's are only $15 and I do not recall how much the Hep B is. The Health Dept is always the cheapest to go if you have to pay. However, when I was going to a JC all the health physicals were free including my TB and MMR's (already had the Hep Bs done) Call your school and see if this is included with your health fee. If not go to public health.

Oakland County Health Dept provides the TB skin test for free, not sure what their fee is for the Hep B series, but I am sure that it is nominal. Best bet is to phone them directly.

And congratualtions for getting accepted to the program. I am sure that you will love it there.

If you don't have any health insurance and only make a certain amount (it varies by how many people are in your family) you might see if there is a local free health clinic for the uninsured. My local clinic is always doing free TB tests and the clinic can probably arrange for you to get the shots for free somewhere if they don't do it. Also if you are a volunteer at a local hospital most offer the hep shots for free and the TB tests is usually a requirement to work so that is free to. Good luck.
