Hello!I am a current nursing student and current CNA. I have a question that I can't seem to find anywhere on the web.
I am very interested in Plastics/Reconstrctive Nursing. I know with most specialties require a couple years of experience in med/surg, would this be true for plastics? How do I got about finding a job in plastics one I graduate. Also does long term care nursing look good on resumes for jobs in plastics?
That would be a relatively small field, so maybe difficult to break into as a new graduate. Most doctors have predominantly medical-assistant staffed offices ...and I'm not sure if they have their own OR nurses or use the nurses at the facilities they operate at. Highly desirable positions may also pay less than positions that involve working in the trenches. Your physical appearance may also matter for those types of jobs, although it will probably not be stated.
I work ambulatory surgery that does all types of surgeries including plastics. I have been in the OR when a plastics patient only needed moderate sedation. I have admitted and recovered plastics. If you can get hired as a new grad to an OR, or transition to OR after few years of med/surg experience, maybe later you could apply at a doctors clinic/surgical center that only does plastics.
If you are going to be the only nurse working in a plastics surgical clinic you will need to be able to handle emergencies. Sure there will be other health care providers in the clinic but a lot of the hands on patient care will be on your shoulders.
