Periop101 Program

Published

Hi everyone!

I am really nervous as I am starting my first RN job in the operating room at one of the most prestigious hospitals in the country! It is one every one of you have heard of hint hint! :p They do a Periop101 program and I don't really know what to expect. I feel bad like I am constantly bombarding them with questions so I figured I would post here and see if anyone has gone through it. What exactly can I expect the first few weeks? Do you think it helps more so than the traditional orientation to the OR? Is there any studying outside of work I have to do? I don't mind, I am just wondering. Does it help ease the stress of starting a new job at all? Another thing I might add I did a nursing internship in the OR so I am already competent in simple circulating procedures. Also my specialty will be neuro, the only specialty I never circulated for in my internship! What are the specific challenges working in neuro as opposed to general, gynecology or orthopedics for example?

Specializes in 2 years school nurse, 15 in the OR!.

I did Periop 101 in 1997 I believe. It's through the AORN and we had a big manual. We had to buy an Alexander's and a AORN standards book. We had classes and hands on as well. I read a lot out of the OR because I was trying to stay ahead. A lot of videos. Malignant Hyperthermia, fire safety, positioning, etc... You'll do fine especially if you already have done an internship. I'm surprised they are making you do it again.

Good luck.

Yeah they make all their new nurses do it at this hospital and the hospital I did my internship was also in another state they know nothing about. Thanks for the info!
