Any CNOR or perioperative nurses from California out there?? I'm a former surgical assistant and newly licensed RN looking for a perioperative post-licensure course, preferably in NorCal but I can travel. Do you by chance know of one? All of the programs listed on AORN are afflilated with hospitals, and I am not currently employed.
I would also like to go for my CNOR, but I'm guessing I would need a periop class and job before that?? Or since I'm a "New Grad" who cannot leave the area, should I forget the OR all together?? I originally went back to school to get my BSN so I could become a RNFA, but with the competitive job market I'm not sure of the best way to get there, or if it is even worth it/possible. Thanks for any advice you may offer! Cat

I can't help you with CA programs, but you will not be eligible for CNOR until you have worked as an OR nurse for 2 years/2400 hours with at least half of that in direct intraop care.
The job market is tight right now, and many posters on this board have quoted a new grad unemployment rate of 47% for CA. My honest advice would be to keep an eye out for open OR positions, but accept the fact that you may have to start elsewhere. As someone who is working in a facility, you will be able to apply for internal applicant only job postings and you will establish a reputation within the facility.
