I am an NP working at a single physician owned private practice. I have always been paid a straight salary, but I would also like to ask for a percent of what I bill. I bill more than any other provider in the practice, including the owner. I don't even know where to begin to determine a reasonable percent I should ask for. I'd appreciate any insight or advice the members here can give me.

It depends on the overhead. What type of practice?
Anything from 50-70% is reasonable. Remember that would be of collections, not billing. Not every person/insurance company ends up paying the full bill or anything at all.

What you want is to focus on actual reimbursement rather than what you bill for. What I would recommend is to stick with a base salary and negotiate a percent of profit after your overhead costs are met. My last clinic did a30 percent bonus either annually based on actual reimbursement or quarterly based on presumed reimbursement.
