People first...

i have been periodically reading through some of the psych threads and have really enjoyed hearing others' thoughts and experiences. there is a wealth of knowledge and skill here. :heartbeat

however, i do have a problem... i cringe everytime i see someone refer to people as their diagnoses ie "schizophrenics" or "borderlines". [btw, i would feel the same way about a nurse referring to "the gallbladder in room 6".]

i really think that, of all people, those of us in psych-mental health nursing should always be cognizant of the impact of labelling and the promotion of stigma and stereotypes.

may i very respectfully suggest that posters try to use people-first language? ie "a person with schizophrenia" or "a person living with bpd". it may seem a bit awkward at first but i feel it is more respectful of our patients.

just my thoughts... i would like to hear how others feel. :nurse:

"there, but for the grace of god, go i."

I agree we need to be respectful. I guess we're up against time, tradition, habit.
