Sep 4, 201510 yr So I recently applied for several PCApositions at a hospital and I am excitedto share that I will soon have an interview for a PCA position on aMed/Surg unit for PRN. Now for some feedbackI know somewhat about PRN's but I needsomeone who is now a PRN in any typeof role whether in a nursing home, hospital,LTAC or home health that can explainhow PRN schedules differ from part timefull time or on call. I have heard some things about a PRN that they arenot guaranteed hours they are calledwhen other employees cannot come in and workor they are just short staffed.Ive heard hours fluctuate in a PRN role. Please some thoughts from thosethat have been in this situation.
Sep 5, 201510 yr I work as a pca on a med surg unit while I'm in nursing school. On my unit, they call prn when they need them, like you said, and they can also pick up shifts that they want. My friend is prn and she can say no if she can't actually come in. If that's the case everywhere it seems like a pretty sweet deal.
Sep 5, 201510 yr Author Yeah sweet deal indeed. The hospital I appliedto has maybe 5 or 6 PRN openings on that unit. Maybe one part time. I spoke with the nurse manager for a good amount of timeabout the positions and my education I told her I was a pre nursing studentabout to apply to the nursing programand right away she asked me to take theonline assessment and send her my resume.I did both asap with a cover letter. She contacted me today to schedule an interview. This is going to be a wonderful experienceI was hoping for either Med/Surg, ICU,or the ER. Telemetry would be nice as wouldCVICU. Any of the major units.
