Parents - what's your schedule?

How do I get my family to understand the time constraints I'll be under?

I'd like to explain a bit before ya'll answer. I have two boys (13 & 11) and they've been doing this school thing with me (pre-reqs) for 2.5 yrs now and A&P 1 & 2 were absolutely killers on us. They are very active - baseball & other sports, religious education, etc. So ... it was always, go, go, go and it seemed like we all were antsy for the semester to end so we could actually eat a homecooked meal and actually be together. For example, oldest got home at 4:30 pm - baseball by 5 pm - til 8 or 9 pm (both boys have it mind you - sometimes at different places LOL) and back home in time for bed.

Now, we are living with my boyfriend and his 9 yr old son and they got a taste of last season's baseball schedule and that alone always had him confused on how we did it all.

My question is this now: I know I'll be lugging my books to their practices and my bf can actually help out with transporting them. BUT .... how do I get study time in without going MIA? I'm so worried about leaving everyone in the dust but I'm the type of person that gives it my all when I commit to something. I want my boys to see how the hard work will pay off but I'm soooooo worried that they'll forget my name by the end of the program (22 mo). :cry:

I am working out of my home (I have a great deal going on) so my hours are as I can fit them in. Guess it pays not to burn bridges with former bosses, lol.:yeah: So, if I can work 5 hrs a week or 40 (which I wont) - he doesnt mind.

For you parents: What does your schedule look like? :confused: HOW DO YOU DO IT?? I *think* my school on some days ends around 1 - I'm thinking about staying at the school or going to the library to study until 4'ish. If I go home, I'm afraid I'll be worried about the dishes & mess.

I know I wont be getting sleep. They told us at registration to plan on the family going malnourished, the house to be a mess & the family to forget who you are. (Said jokingly I hope?) but then again - I am worried that when I'm home - they wont actually let me study. Ive seriously thought about putting my desk in my very large, walk-in closet and then putting a note on the bedroom door stating, "Unless you're bleeding - stay out" but then I'm sure one of the boys would punch the other in the nose just to get in. :coollook:LOL JK!!!

I KNOW it can be done - and I KNOW it will be a lot of work but I would like to hear REALISITICALLY how your afternoons/weekends go once the kids are home from school.

Ok.....well my daughter was 1years old when I went back to school and this may when I graduate she will be 6....I have gone to school pretty much her entire life.....This is what I do....

I have class/clinicals on Mon and wed from 7-4 and then tuesday evening for my sociology degree from 6-9, and thursday for test...Yes I crammed everything in this semester into 2 days, but next semester I am 5 days a week....This has by far been my lightest load class wise....

My daughter cheers, takes gymnastics, and is a pageant girl...haha

So, I take her to school every morning which I can drop her off at 7am cause they start at 7:20am, then i myself head to school or the hospital...I have her grandma pick her up...then I go home a little after 4, make something to eat and head to whatever happens to be going on that night...come home and get baths, read stories, have popcorn night, put her to bed......THEN I STUDY....Yeah I don't really get much sleep, but since i have those other days off, i try to arrange study groups or time at home just to study....but yes my house is a mess, and will stay a mess until tuesday after finals...haha

It can be done, everyone just has to work together...stay positive, and communicate....best wishes..

Thanks - I will be going 5/week at first and then I think we get a day off about 8 weeks in to the program.

So study after they go to bed - I did that with my first degree & I was hoping to get away from that this time HA HA (I know, I know - wishful thinking).

I'm *hoping* that if I can stay at school/library til 4 pm that, that will give me anywhere from 1-3 hrs of study time and then the weekends along with whatever I can fit in at night.

Thats my wishful thinking though - thanks for answering. It really helps knowing that others go thru similiar situations and can deal successfully with it.

I'm not a parent but I do know what several do in my classes. One girl I know will have her babysitter for an extra hour and just stay and study. Also some have their kids take on more responsibility (age appropriate) they may have to make dinner, (frozen pizza) or vacume or whatever. My friends do say that things may not be cleaned or cooked the way they would have however it is getting cleaned, and they are eating. Hope this helps

Thanks! I think I'm going to have to come to grips that the house is going to go downhill fast. HOPEFULLY my BF can help but who knows, he may be a battle in himself. LOL

I just finished my 1st semester. I finally found a system that worked for me. My books go w/ me everywhere. I leave school and then wait for my kids in the parking lot and read and study. When they get home I help them w/ their homework and cook dinner and clean up a bit. After dinner I study - wherever that may be. Both my kids are in intense sports. Sometimes I stayed up til 11pm or so, but I was not usually sleep deprived. On weekends I'd get up early as usual and study in my bedroom (door shut) or at school. I'd take them to their sports. Games I'd watch, practices, I studied. Just stay on top of your work as much as possible. You'll be fine. Really. So far I have very good grades. Once I got a feel for how the tests were going to be, I was able to ease up on my studying quite a bit.

My kids do remember who I am. They do sometimes pout that I'm not available 24/7 like before, but I try to make it up to them on weekends and special times. They warn you that nursing school will be some horrific nightmare, but it doesn't have to be.
