OU Program Changes

Anyone know what is going on with the upcoming program changes to the nursing programs at OU? The informational program flyers all state: "Effective September 1, 2010, the admission criteria for full admission to the Accelerated Second Degree BSN programs will change. If you have not completed the required courses for admission and submitted your application for admission to the School of Nursing by September 1, 2010, you will be required to meet the new admission requirements."

I am curious if this is just a GPA change or a pre-req change too! I am a little bit nervous if it is a pre-req change,as I will be eligible to apply in Dec (after the change is made)... I am hoping that this won't cause me a setback in applying.

Hi, I saw that as well. I am actually interviewing next month so it will not affect me. The way I read it is you must have a minimum 3.2 gpa(cumulative) in the core 5 classes (Bio, A & P, Chem, biochem, pysch); but it also says a minimum of 2.8 in each of the classes which is a change as well. So if you have less than a 2.8 in any class, you may not be admitted. It looks like they are upping the bar to get in and this may be due to some students getting in and then not doing well. Not sure.

when did you apply? are you bsn? On bsn application it said it is 2012 does that mean that they are not accepting student until 2012

I applied in August 2009 and I am interviewing for January 2011. Yes, I am applying for ABSN program. I just finished my last two pre-reqs in the Fall and was recently notified for an interview.

Just to answer your other question, yes it's very likely that they are not accepting until 2012. When I applied last summer they told me January or May 2011. Basically add 1.5 years to your application. My advice is to apply as early as possible even if you aren't completed with all the classes. This way they know who you are, etc. I applied early in the process. One silver lining is they sometimes move people up so keep this in mind. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I am okay with a GPA increase, after all you practically need a 4.0 for the ASN program at OCC, so why shouldn't OU increase their standards too. I was more freaked that they might be adding to the pre-req's. I to have heard that it is a 1 1/2 year wait for the Accelerated Program... but most say that the actual wait ends up being a year (people drop out of the program, get accepted into another program, etc).

Agree. I know someone who just got moved up from the Fall to May 2010 at OU. The thing to do is let them know you want to move up . I have heard they move up based on GPA rank but this may or may not happen all the time. Regardless, Oakland is only 12 months so waiting a year is not a big deal. I plan on working until the program starts once I get accepted. I know another person who got accepted to Henry Ford but is not starting for 3 years!!! I think its normal to have to wait at least 6-12 months for most programs. Good luck everyone!!
