Hello, considering switching to OR nursing, any comments, suggestions, ect. will be very helpful. I have 2 yrs. total exp. as an RN including oncology, womens health, and currently home care. I keep thinking about how I enjoyed my experience in the OR during school but wonder if my age (almost 50) will be a problem in hiring or ability to push carts ect. As I said, any comments, suggestions, ect. will be helpful.

Hi, I was on orientation for 5 weeks in the OR when I realized it wasn't for me ,I really missed the patient contact. I found that in the OR your most important skills are positioning the patient, specimens and humoring the surgeons !!
Really Michelle? Hmmm, does not sound very exciting. I observed a few surgeries and thought it was great. But then I was only observing, not working.

hi mimi,
being an OR nurse is quite challenging especially when ur in cardio-thoracic surgeries. yes u may not have a patient contact bec they are sedated. once ur already a perioperative nurse that is the time that u can have contact w/ ur pt and u can appreciate ur contrbution to the progress of their health. u will be able to track down their progress from pre-op to post-op care. ur clinical capabilities and skills goes with it bec if u don't have the right armour then surgery won't be successful. whatever field u choose is up to u, what's impt is ur happy of what ur doing. :wink2:
I just want to add that I feel OR nurses are a special dedicated group, I admire what they do . There is so much to learn and know about each system of the body's surgeries. It just wasn't my "cup of tea". That's what so great about being a nurse-so many choices in career path. Good luck
