Open Heart unit

I'm looking at a job offered to me from an Open Heart unit. It's not technically called an "ICU", but even the ICU at that hospital sends nurses who want to work with advanced hemodynamics (pulmonary lines, wedge pressures) to that unit. Does anyone have any experience working in an Open Heart unit, and if so, how will it look on an application to school?

There aren't many CRNA schools there in kentucky. I was just curious as to where you were planning on going to CRNA school?

You are correct; there is only one school here. I'll be applying to the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia (1st choice) and University of Cincinnati (2nd choice). It's a limited number, I know. If I don't get accepted the first time around, I'll just apply again to those 2 schools. i'm not interested in moving far away.

I am also applying to the University of Cinncinati. Hopefully I will be able to give you some pointers by the time the interview process is over :)

Ether,

Those are the two schools I am applying to as well! You are applying for 2006, right? I am applying for 2005 (apps are in, file is complete at both schools). After the process is over, I would be happy to share any info with you!

Sorry to be off topic, but FutureGasMan, have you heard anything from UC yet. I was told they wait until after the deadline to start reviewing apps....is that what they told you?

Our facility has a 12 bed CCU where our open hearts go. We also have a small (2 bed)area in the back of the recovery unit where 2 of our CCU nurse recover the open hearts and then transport them to the unit. Close to 80% of our hearts are extubated before they leave OR. Most are sitting up after 4 hours (have the cool beds that "morph" into a cardiac chair) Our infection rates are VERY low, our recivery rates and pt. satisfaction scores are high! We are rather proud of the unit and it's track record! Even though we are a rather small facility, our numbers are right up there with the big guys!!

I did speak with UC and they told me that they do not pick up the folders until October 1st. So you must suffer with me till they review all materials and hopefully give us an interview date! Maybe I will see you there. Do you have an interview with Akron set? Mine is October 9th.

Just wondering when you were contacted for Akron's interview? I know a couple people who applied for 2005 and haven't been contacted yet....hopefully they will be soon!

Yes I was contacted about two weeks ago regarding the interview. A letter was sent and I had a choice on what day I would like to go and I had to schedule a time with the secretary. I would think that they would have been contacted by now considering the interview is in three weeks.
