One RN on a shift?

Published

I am a new RN BSN grad. I have been working on a post partum unit for a little over 4 months now. I was scheduleded to work tonight with another RN. They called me off b/c they had 7 pts. So its just one licensed person and a tech working with 7pts. Is that normal? Is that safe?

I don't know if it's 'normal', but I've seen floors do that. Not very safe and not too smart. On our unit, if the staffing grid called for only 2 staff, they had to be nurses.

I have 37 patients on a geriatric ward ( quite acute care most of the time, it´s like being on a complex medical ward combined with geropsych) I am the only nurse on the shifts( with 2-3 aides) ..LOL ...it´s crazy and unsafe and I am looking for a fire exit!!!! Don´t do anything tour not comtable with thats what I tell myself!
