I applied for a job to train in the SICU. I got an email back from the recruiter who says they are only hiring experienced RNs for the SICU (I have no hopsital experience) but there are openings in the neuro or burn unit they will train for. This is a large teaching hospital. I would like to eventually become a nurse anesthetist somewhere down the road. Do you think experience in the neuro or burn unit would make me desireable to transfer to SICU in the future? I don't know if CRNA schools accept critical care experience in the neuro or burn units, but I guess a person has to start somewhere.

I started off in a Neuro ICU. You can easily transfer after 2 years to a SICU. And I worked with several nurses who only had Neuro ICU experience who got accepted into CRNA schools.
Take the job...neuro or burn. Both will be good experiences.

So glad to here I'm not the only one doing Neuro ICU to prep for CRNA school. My goal is to do overtime and floating to the SICU and do SICU with U.S. Army Nurse Corps reserve ( I commission next month). Hope all this experience, along with my previous years of acute care nursing will add up to something that is attractive on my CRNA school application.

1. Where is this teaching hospital?
2. If they claim to be a teaching hospital, why on God's name R they not willing to "teach" you ?
3. I hope it isn't Erlanger in Chattanooga because if it is, then I don't feel secure working there if I were to be hired.
