Hello everyone. I am currently an LPN student in NJ and I just finished my OB clinical rotation. I LOVED it. I feel as if my options are limited if I stay with LPN. I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on what's the best way to get into maternity nursing? Or if anyone has any advice/opinions on if I could pursue it being an LPN. Anything would be helpful. Thank you in advance!!!

It would be extremely difficult to find any LPN position in an acute facility these days....

We had LPNs as support nurses in the rural hospital I last worked at and in one of the rural hospitals I do travel assignments to! A smaller hospital might be your best bet as they tend to be lower risk areas over all and also tend to be underfunded so have to be creative with their staffing.

Also we had tons of LPNs who worked mother baby in Toronto as post partum and as such they provided a lot if low risk newborn resusc.

Keep looking!

The hospital I work at doesn't hire LPN's for mother/baby or L & D anymore. We do have a few LPNs, but they have been there a long time, before they stopped hiring them. But they are not allowed to do L & D, only postpartum. I think it is going to be very hard to get any OB job as an LPN. Have you considered going for RN?

Don't give up. I got a specialty Dr. office 2 weeks after I graduated my LPN school. Keep your eyes out for OB/GYN or midwifery offices. Also you may be able to qualify for a tech in Mother/Baby in a hospital. While they may not be the kinds of jobs you had in mind, they certainly can help get your foot in the door elsewhere once you pursue your RN. May I also suggest some Doula training. Some facilities have their own doula programs and that could be very valuable experience as well. Good luck!

I agree, don't give up. I did my final preceptorship on L & D and was hired before I even graduated. Its hard, but fulfilling work. Most days have a happy ending.

We also don't hv lppn either except as an OB tech.
