OASIS questions

Hi, all,

I am a new graduate and my first job is in HH. Thanks to the awesome nurses here, I have learned that OASIS is supposed to be used in documentation. Yes, it's true, I had never heard of it before...

I have been trying to research OASIS, as my company has not said anything to me about it, and I am confused. What I am finding is a lot of forms, which, I do understand, but my company has not provided me with any forms that look like these.

I have been given a very general nurse's note form, and forms for SOC and D/C. Does it sound to you all that we just don't do this?

Can anyone fill me in on what I should know about OASIS?

Thank you

There is a great OASIS manual, u can download it or purchase itJust google OASIS chapter manual, that should get you there, it helps with every question

Where can I get the Oasis manual?

The Oasis is only completed when the primary insurance is Medicare or Medicaid, this is called "certified homecare". If your patient's insurance is Blue Cross or other private insurance (vs. government insurance) than the Oasis doesn't need to be completed. Or is it possible that you are doing "private duty nursing", where auto companies or workman's comp is being billed?

My agency insists on OASIS for all patients over the age of 18... it's super annoying.

I worked for a company that did that. What a waste of time and resources!

My agency requires OASIS on all patient's over 18 too.

When one of the HHC agencies that I worked for was looking for a way to save money, I brought this "OASIS" for everyone issue up at a meeting. We were doing the OASIS for everyone including patients that were IV only cases. I gave an example that OASIS just doesn't fit for an average under 65, walkie-talkie, with IV therapy for an infection. And the insurance companies other that Medicare do not mandate it. I suggested a smaller assessment for private insurance patients that would still include all of the important data. I explained that filling out the OASIS cost the company more money for the nurses that were paid hourly, and the salary nurses could see more patients without the needless paperwork. Furthermore, the QA nurse could evaluate more charts without an OASIS in a shorter period of time. The quicker the chart info gets to the insurance company, the faster the agency gets paid. I could really see where this could save the company money. Well, they agreed but never did anything about it stating that "McKesson software doesn't have that type of assessment available" Really??

In my agency, we do OASIS for all clients over 18 y/o. OP - OASIS for Mcr PPS are complex and there isn't a lot of training out there, so I have newer nurses just complete an assessment and I do the OASIS to make sure it's done right. As other posters point out, if you're doing private duty or private insurance, an OASIS isn't required. So short answer is, some companies don't have all nurses doing their own OASIS for Medicare until they're trained and have proven compentency in it.

Ohhh, I know the OASIS is a beast but your nurses need to learn it ASAP if they have Medicare patients. There is no right or wrong answer for many of the questions, its the nurses assessment of the patient. Its so important that when a nurse performs her assessment, she is thinking about the way she should answer the corresponding OASIS question. I have spent a lot of time debating OASIS answers with other nurses and disciplines.

Many companies have training. Fazzi is one well-known one. Look them up online. They explain the reasoning behind every question. The OASIS is the backbone of certified home care and the nurse doing the assessment is one who should fill it out.
