Nursing

What is like to be a critical care nurse....?

Featured Replies

Never boring.

Often hectic and crazy.

Sometimes frightening.

Usually rewarding.

Amen, Tazzi. I love critical care especially now that I work in SICU. My day is never boring at work.

Yeah, not boring and I'm usually BEAT at the end of a day. Some shifts are busier than others, but even with 2 patients, I'm going all day. I usually work NOCs, but I picked up some OT day shifts this week.

Had a case today that presented with sepsis secondary to PNA. Chest film and CT looked like crap. Was vented on PCV with a hx of pulmonary fibrosis and a massive hematoma in his belly and groin from a failed central line attempt at another facility. In 12 hours I administered 4 units blood, 2 FFP, a bag of platelets, 2 bottles of albumin, several bags of fluid, a BUNCH of IV antibiotics, managed a versed gtt, levophed gtt, norcuron gtt, insulin gtt, A line, CVP, and started a BIS Monitor, Q4h draws. and a partridge in a pear tree.

Of course they make this pt a 1:1 AFTER my shift. Thankfully my other pt was a PCU downgrade and didn't need much attention.

All in a day's work. I'd rather run my orifice off than spend it sitting around. I just enjoy the challenge.
