I am in the accelerated BNFP at Estrella. I study constantly. For me, the most challenging part of nursing school is trying to master the enormous mounds of material in a short time. On a typical day during the week, class is about 3 hrs, then home to read and study about 5-7 chapters worth of material for next week's class or a test that is coming up (that's not including the powerpoints or reviews to go with the lecture, or NCLEX review). Add careplans from clinicals on top of that and well, it's busy. Some nights I can easily find myself studying/working on careplans until 9:00 at night and still not be done. I found out that school is about studying smarter, not harder, so studying only what you need to know is the key to sanity and good grades. Am I tired? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes.
A good part-time job at a hosptial is a CNA, ER tech, registration....you'll get to be in the environment and learn. I still get out and do things like go to movies, but not often. You have to schedule some "me" time or you'll burn out really quick. But granted, I'm in an accelerated program, so it's a little different for me. Hope this helps.

I am also in the banner program at estrella (hi missrissa!) i really don't study that much, i review constantly and do nclex questions all the time. but as far as out and out studying like reading the book? not much, they mostly collect dust in my office.....and i really don't take too many notes. i focus more on reading the ppt's before classes, listening to the instructor during class, listening to eri audio during down time, and a ton of nclex questions to fill in the cracks (i average about 25/day, but have been known to do up to 300). i think i've written maybe three pages of notes the entire class.....i own a pocket pc and use it to study whenever i have down time in class/clinicals instead of gossiping , this frees up alot of time at home. While I don't think my formula for studying would work well for others, it works pretty well for me as I pull A's & B's and passed the HESI with little problems.
As far as work, find something flexible, preferrably in a hospital; even if its transporting clients. If your just now applying to nursing school out here, be prepared to wait.

What is ERI Audio? I'm the same when it comes to studying, so I'm glad to see that some one else has been able to pull it off, I just hope it still works for me when it comes to nursing school. Can't wait to start!!!
