It depends on the School that you go to. Most CNM schools require that you have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing to enter and you gradute with a Masters Degree. Frontier School has an ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) to MSN option though. Yale has a program where you enter as a non-nurse and graduate as a nurse-midwife.

It's a process completely independant of wanting to be a CNM. You can do an ADN program (usually 4 semesters of nursing courses with clinicals in med-surg, OB, long-term care, OR, etc and required courses in math, psych, english) a bachelors degree program (usually 4 years of nursing courses with clinicals in med-surg, OB, peds, community health, etc and required courses in english, math, language, etc) and there are some diploma programs left where you essentially intensely study only nursing-related subjects. There are also accelerated programs which are generally for people with degrees in another field which can be anywhere from 12 months-2 years or so. They usually require a lot of prerequisites in areas like biology, statistics, chemistry, microbiology, etc.

Schools with direct entry programs have an RN licensing program which may or may not grant a BSN combined with admission to the master's program. The RN licensure portion of the program is independant of the master's specialty choice because it is for all students (not just those in a particular specialty) and the education must meet all the requirements for RN licensure in that state. I did a direct-entry program and am now an RN working on my MSN.
