My class is considering buying our professor a gift as a Thank You before we move onto our next semester, but we dont really know what to get for her. She has been very warm, helpful and respectful to each of us which does not happen very often in nursing schools. She has given us all great advice and helped us through our own personal battles. If any one has any suggestions for gifts we can give as a class it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm one of those people who believe such gifts should not be necessary. A card, a thank-you note, a positive evaluation at the end of the course -- those types of things should be sufficient.
However, if it is your culture to add a gift -- I recommend something she can use and not some knick-knack that will just collect dust on a shelf. Most faculty members are poorly paid for their time. Give her something that she can actually use. If you know of something that she would enjoy (a hobby, a gift certificate at a restaurant or spa, etc. ) then that's OK. But don't choose something like that unless you know she would actually appreciate the gift. I've gotten several gift certificates to Starbucks over the years -- and I hate coffee!
If you really don't know what she would like ... I suggest a gift certificate at a place like Amazon.com. They offer a wide variety of products -- and she could order something from a place like that from home. Another thought would be a gift certificate from a local shopping mall -- or from your school's bookstore. Give her a choice as to how she will use the gift.

i agree with llg. my husband is a college professor and his favorite gifts have been good evaluations, being mentioned to friends and new students as a professor to be sure to take, pans of brownies, cookies, etc. he has been given amazon and kindle gift certificates, wal*mart gift certificates,
we have been given dinners at a favorite mom and pop italian restaurant. mentioning to the admin (verbally or in a letter) how much you enjoyed your professor's classes and how helpful she was, is great.
one of my husband's all time favorite presents was a letter detailing what the student enjoyed, found helpful, and why she thought he was a great teacher.

I think letters are a lovely thing...
Thanks for all your responses =] our class just wanted to give her something to show we appreciated all she has done especially since she made us all little care packages in the beginning of the semester to get us through this semester and the following semesters. maybe we can do a class card with a gift card or a small notebook with a note written by each of us.
she'll appreciate your thoughtfulness and time. something else classes have done some years is to have someone take an informal picture of the class and then put it on a mug, poster, or sweatshirt.
