Hi, I'm about half-way through my first semester in the nursing program. We are doing a lot with the nursing process, narrative documentation etc. Does anyone know a good book to use as a supplement in getting this documentation down correctly? Also, if any specific math books have helped you understand IV flow rates, drip rates or infusion times please let me know!! Thank you!

Im in the middle of my first semester too. This website,DosageHelp.com - Helping Nursing Students Learn Dosage Calculations is a good place to practice dosage calc. I don't know of a good book for documentation but our instructor just stresses to us about doing it chronologically. What did we do from start to finish that way we document every step without rambling off with random details.Your drug book should be your best bet in determining infusion times. We use this flow rate equation for IV flow rates : volume(mL)/Time (hours) = flow rate in mL/hr ex. 1 liter of NS to infuse over 10 hours - 1L/10hr= 1000mL/10hr = 100 mL/hr
for drip rates on secondary tubings we use, volume (mL)/Time (minutes) x C (gtts/min on secondary tubing bag) EX. 1g of ceftriaxone (in 50mL bag) to infuse over 30 minutes = 50mL/30min x 15 gtts/min = 1.6666...x 15 = 25ggts/min hope thats somewhat helpful :) A good dosage calc book can be found on amazon or even McKays used books if you have one near. This is the one I use and its great :
