Nursing in Madison

Yes I work there. It is basically a nice place to work. SOme of the management is lousy but I find that everywhere! Where specifically do you want to work? I have been there 8 years so can let you know about most of the units.

Hello I am new to this forum. I am moving to Madison in June 2009 and will be looking for a nursing job. I am an ICU nurse with 15 years Neuro ICU experience. I am not sure where to start looking . I could use some Help.

Brissygirl - You'll have better luck @ UW if you have a BSN or some experience, not a lot of position there for newer nurses

Neurorn031 - Most of the health care facilities in Madison just post openings on their websites. University of Wisconsin Hospitals & clinics can be accessed @ www.uwhealth.org. There are 3 other hospitals in Madison also Meriter (www.meriter.com) St. Mary's (www.stmarysmadison.com) William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital (www.madsion.va.gov) All are very competative salary wise and Madison has some of the highest wages in the state. If you like clinic nursing you may also want to check Dean Clinic (www.deancare.com) I worked there for 7 years in the ophthalmology department and it was one of the best places I've worked. Or Group Health Cooperative (www.ghc-hmo.com) In general there are not a lot of clinic jobs available and most of the hospitals don't have nearly as many positions as they did a year ago. In general I have really liked working in Madison and am very hopeful to be moving back there again also.

Em do you think that a New BSN Grad will have difficulty finding work in Madison hospitals? i have noticed the openings are down quite a bit from last year as well.

There are definately a lot less jobs than there were a year ago and they do seem me picky about the position they're accepting people for. It is probably going to be very commetative the next few months, but will probably be a little better in the spring. I graduated from an ADN program last April and I moved to Appleton and took a job with the compnay I did my internship with. I think pretty much everyone I graduated with did end up with jobs, but it took some people a while. Some people are working in clinics, at Mendota menatal health and for select specialty. Also lots of my class mates ended up in Janesville. If you don't mind the travel or are willing to move both Portage & Monroe have opening pretty regularly and sometimes the smaller hospitals are easier to get in to to start, but pay tends to be a little lower.
