Hey guys. New here, doing research before hopping into a nursing program here in melbourne at Keiser.
I have heard it said a few times that florida is one of the worst states to nurse in, can anyone elaborate on this? Why is that? Is it just pay or is there more to it?
Thanks :)

If you use Florida in the Search option, you will find an abundance of information.
As a note, it is the lousy pay, the number of cheapskate forprofit hospitals, the age of the population (weeks of no patients under 60 and 1/3 of patients having Sundowners every night...with no sitters), a greater than average number of patients that speak no English whatsoever, many homeless elderly, and MDs with a G-d complex. Add to that, that you will be worked to death for 4-5 monthes (patients in hall beds on the floors), and in someplaces, low censused in the slow season. It is also Med Surg hell, even on the specialty floors,- serious amounts of M/S overflow everywhere, as well as inability to move criticals to the ICUs because there are no beds.
Anything else you need to know?

:rotfl: That about sums it up!!! I'm leaving here and heading up to Tampa. 10 years trauma ICU experience and they offered me $22/hour!
Can you say, "I DON'T THINK SO!"
Working prn pool with no benefits and still get cancelled more often than not. No affordable housing anymore, all the apartments are going condo for over $200,000 for a 1 br/ 900 sq feet!
I wish you all luck to those who are coming down here....Hope you have a nice savings to get you through!

Oh God! You are all depressing me lol
I just graduated from nursing school in NY and purchased a house in New Tampa few months ago. I am studying for my boards and have been working as a nurse intern since June 2005 in PEDS/PEDS ICU with rotations to the ER, L&D, and Med Surg during the internship. They are still allowing me to stay on board as an intern instead of a nurse grad. The pay may be less, but there is less pressure for the NCLEX and the embarassment of losingt my job if i do not pass (God Forbid).
I have been told that the pay is less and yes I guess I can deal with that, but I would definitely have to look into a place that will offer me some benefits. God help me from what I am hearing from these posts. I am bi-lingual so the language will not be a barrier, but getting paid 15 bucks an hour will be. I know people without college degrees that make 15 bucks an hour. That is just crazy.
