Nursing at BOP Facility

Anyone ever work in a BOP facility? What was the hiring process like? What was the work & facility like? I know every facility is different but I'm curious as to what it's generally like. Oh, was the documentation on paper or computer? I have had various correctional experience. Did you have any correctional experience before applying? Thank you!

Did you go to the academy?

I did. Mostly male dominated throughout. There are 88 agencies training at the same location. Some are there for months while BOP is only 3 weeks. You stay in a dorm and eat chow hall food. If you miss the bus, big trouble too.

So this training academy is 3 weeks long and you stay there the whole time? I just applied at a BOP facility last week.

Yeah you stay there the whole time. There is a rigorous physical test there the first or second day. Running, obstacles course, stairs with wearing a weighted vest, dummy drag. All of it is timed. Get in shape or no job.

It takes months to get into shape for that. They tell you to train for it. I did it and saw some really obese but in shape people have great times. If you go over max time limit, they give one repeat chance. Fail that, you get flown home and job revoked. You can be working 4 months before you go, but if you fail, no more job.

That's crazy! I love working in corrections & was really interested in the BOP. But I'm rethinking it now.

I'm not sure where you are from, but the facility I interviewed at won't even let anyone start their position until the safety training is complete first.

I worked one in AZ. You stayed with a buddy until training. It was back logged back then
