Hi are there any nurses out there who work for their state. Well if you do are any of you experiencing budget cuts that may effect your jobs?:o I am and it is causing a lot of hardships, a part of you wonder should you leave for better pay raises or stay because of longivity?

I work for the state as a surveyor. More positions are being created, so I'm not concerned at this point. I worked for many years in the private sector, for more $$ and all that good stuff. Although I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination, I make a decent wage and the benefits (insurance, retirement) rock. I can always pick up a weekend shift somewhere if I need extra $$. I also have the freedom to work independently and do not have anyone constantly looking over my shoulder, which is a huge plus to me. I work M-Th (and a Friday every great once in a while) and have all weekends and holidays off.

I am happy where I am and have no desire to return to the private sector. I hope this helps.

That sounds great, I love my job but I feel a little shakey with the budget cuts I live in VA and I know as an RN it will not be hard to find a job but not like the one I have.

Good luck

I don't feel like my job is threatened but I don't like that some services for our psych patients are being cut. Psych is never the 'money maker' in healthcare so the budget is a big thing every year. I'm leaving this job in 6 months because my husband is being restationed, so I'll be interested to see how this position is affected in the future.

If we weren't military, I'd stay though. I love the job, the patients, the co-workers, and the schedule.

Hi there, I have been seriously thinking about working for the state as a RN surveyor as well. I am curious as to the starting pay for new RN surveyors, especially with the state budget crunch. I hear for a new RN the beginning pay is like $43K annually? OldladyRN, any advice would be greatly apprecatie regarding an approprate salary offer. I also hear the state is very selective in the hiring process for state positions as such? And that, an indepth background and extensive interiew process is involved. But as you stated, the benfits and autonomy with the position is a plus!

Awaiting your reply....thanks much

I currenty work for the the state of GA as a nurse. They are cutting the budget but it will not affect us nurses who provide direct patient care, mostly mangement will be affected. I have been thinking about leaving because of the five day week schedule and every other weekend. I work the second shift (3-11pm). I feel like all I do is work. If I don't get up early to do things before I know it I have to go into work. I have always worked 12 hours and had 4 days off per week. I am so unsure as to what to do. I want to pick up a PRN job so that I can make so additional income, but the only time I can is on my weekends off. On my weekends off I want to spend time with family and friends and take care of personal needs. I am planning on going PRN with the state and I will have another PRN job. I am a little scared because I have always had a full time job which gave me security as to my income, with PRN I will have to work when there is an opening. Any suggestions?

I work for the state of Nevada and right now, all "non-essential" personnel have to take one furlough day a month. Now they are talking about holding a special session for cuts. I'm a tad bit nervous because I'm the new kid on the block and I would have to lose my job. I LOVE my job and have an amazing schedule along with benefits. I don't think I would find another job that could compare. I guess I could always use my critical care experience to do conscious sedation in an outpatient surgery center? Sigh.
