Nurse practitioner

My husband and I are interested in moving from the US to the UK after I graduate with my Masters in Nursing. I am just starting to look into this...

Is there an equivalent to a nurse practitioner/ advance practice nurse in the UK and what are the requirements for licensure and employment? Any advice you could offer is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There are advanced practice nurses in the Uk but they are not regulated / registered like they are in the US. The NMC is supposed to be working on this but it is a long time coming. In the meantime have a look at the following link from the Royal College of Nursing and it will hopefully answer your questions.

from the rcn information in liverpooljane's post, it sounds like nurse practitioners (as we know them in the u.s) are not recognized at the same level in the u.k. with orders being denied because they are "nurses" and not "doctors" and the pay being quite low, it sounds like it will be a very difficult transition. i am in the same situation, sailrmar9. i will be graduating as a new np in december 2011 and my fiance has a job offer in england. i am not sure how licensing would go for that. get licensed in the u.s. and then again in the u.k.? is there actually an np license to obtain? it is hard to decipher what is actually available currently because it is changing.

In answer to your question, no there is no additional registration requirement for advanced practice nursing, to get a job as a nurse practitioner you apply when they are advertised providing you meet the minimum requirement (which varies from place to place)

Nurse Practitioners are generally well accepted here now, I have worked for over 7 years as a ANP and have never had a problem with anything I request being refused, I am a nurse prescriber so am legally allowed to prescribe any medication within my scope of practice.
