Nurse with a kid???

As far as I remember, it's illegal to ask about family ties or responsibilities in ANY field. can't imagine it's different in nursing.

Will an international nurse, who has a child who is 2 - 5 years old, face problems in finding a job at a hospital in the US? Do recruiting agences and hospital HR ask anyone if she has children and how old they are? Is it a disadvantage when a nurse with a small kid is trying to find a job or to be sponsored? Maybe finding a good and suitable excuse they will turn you down? Has any of you had this kind of experience? I mean real experience. Because law is one thing and life is another. Any comments, please?

Hi Julia777- I am taking two children with me to the USA. My recruiters had no problem with the fact. When I did my phone interview with my hospital they were obviously aware- mentioning there were good schools in the area. I got the job after a 13 minute interview!!!

All my paperwork has been filed with my husband and children included on the appropriate forms.I have to pay for their visas when I finally get to have my interview at the embassy, and of course their airfares to the USA. I know there are a couple of others who are also taking their children who read this forum.

I don't think you should be discriminated against purely for the fact of having children.

But if it is a really small one like 2 or 3 years old?

In the US, there is no problem whatsoever with having children, many of the facilities even have on-site day care.

agencies or hospital wouldnt mind...well they shouldnt but then it will be a problem for you...there will be on-site day care but that would be convient if you work am shift...what if you will work pm or even nights? hard to get sitters thats reliable and will charge you at a reasonable cost

I am going to the USA with 2 young sons - not been a problem for me...never thought it would be :)

but how could you manage to pay all the expenes regarding your two kids with your relative lower salary?

My salary in the USA isnt lower infact it is slightly higher - or at least it will be!!! :)
