Nurse Injector

Hi All, I am a new RN working on a med/surg unit. I have recently become interested in the field of aesthetics nursing and would like to find out how to break into this field, particularly Nurse Injector positions. Like every other field in nursing, the Nurse Injector positions that I have come across require experience and I can understand that since this is such a specialized field. My questions are where can I get experience and do I need to take specific courses to get into this field? I would love to hear from any nurses working in this field! ThanksJenn

I have been a nurse injector for a little over 4 years. I got into it by taking a position at a private practice plastic surgery office and eventually was trained in dermal filler and Botox injections and sclerotherapy. When I got the job I was only about 6 months out of school and was working on a labor and delivery unit with no previous plastics or injections training. I also have been trained in laser hair removal, laser tattoo removal, and intense pulse light skin rejuvenation as well as microdermabrasion. In addition to those things I also am the clinic manager and work in the private surgery center attached to our clinic 1 day a week. The injections and laser training was almost all on the job with some aesthetic meeting courses mixed in as well as in office training from nurse injectors and laser treatment specialists across the country.

I think it's best for a nurse injector to break into the scene either at a dermatology office or a plastics office partly because you normally would have some other duties besides the injecting. That's important because while you're just starting out and making a name for yourself you usually don't have enough clients to keep you injecting all day every day. Also, I think it's extremely important to develop a good relationship with the physician you are working under as they are invaluable if you ever experience any problems or difficulties with patients (tissue necrosis, eyelid ptosis, burns from lasers, scarring, nodules, allergic reactions, overall dissatisfaction with the procedure, etc.).

Overall, my advice would be to search for jobs in plastics or dermatology that have a lot of experience with cosmetic treatments since they would be likely to know how best to train you and would likely have an established patient base of the type of client you're looking for.

I have been a RN injector for several years and love it! Check with your state nursing board to see if RN's can do the injections first.
