HI all,
I am a new BSN grad who just obtained a job in a level 3 NICU. I did about 5 weeks of preceptorship in this unit, so I kno w bit of what I am getting in to, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about NRP. We are required to obtain it within 1 year of employment and I want to do it ASAP. What all does it cover?

You have a 9 unit test. I'm assuming in a level 3 you would have to complete all 9, but in some, you only have to do 5 of them(I think it's 5). They're asterisked in the book, but be sure to ask. You'll also practice coding. Our instructor gives you different scenarios and you're to act on them with the dummies. She also includes quizzing you on what you'd need to bring to different types of deliveries. We practiced intubating too, even though that is clearly not a skill of the bedside RN.
Edit-that first line should say you have a test on each of 9 units.
Thank you! How long of a class or training is it?

Each facility does it differently, but generally the modules are available through the AAP website. Depending on how comfortable you are with the material they take about 3-4 hours to complete (total). Then there is a skills checkoff. At my place we are lucky enough to have a sim lab where this is done - an hour or two. If it's required for your job (which it should be in a Level III) you should get paid for all of that.
For a long time I worked in mother-baby/newborn nursery and found it very intimidating as we had to do all 9 modules. Having been the baby nurse at deliveries for well over a year now I find myself much more comfortable with the algorithms. It's one of those things that gets easier the longer you do it IMO.
Good to know, thank you.

Do they offer the class at work? Our new peeps do the online test and then go to a sim lab or mock lab for the skills and codes. I would think if they are level 3 then they offer it there. We actually build it into our orientation during the week they start taking admits and going to the delivery room.

I am a new grad and started in a level III NICU in January. I just did my NRP certification this past month. As long as you read over the book and understand the algorithm it is not bad at! Good luck!
