NP preceptor

I will advise you to go from office-to-office. Thant's how I got my clinical sites. Also, ask friends if they know someone. Finding clinical sites is one of the hardest things I had to do in NP school. Good luck.

Are you wanting acute care or primary? I am at Wayne State University's ACNP-DNP program. They find out NP sites for us, but the DNP sites you find yourself bc they apply directly to your CIP. I'm in my last year finally. If u have questions , feel free to inbox me :-).

U Mich - Flint only has ANP, FNP, and Psych NP. I see a lot of primary care practices with FNP's around the greater Flint area when I used to visit there from Detroit. I do see competition from SVSU NP students though so best thing to do is prepare and call and book prospective preceptors way in advance. Tina's tip on MICNP is a good one...MICNP has a Flint Area/Central Michigan Chapter. As a former ACNP student in Detroit, even though our preceptors were arranged for us by the school, I didn't find it hard to look for NP's willing to precept on my own. All the hospital systems in the Detroit area have NP's in a wide variety of practices from ER, IM, ICU, Cardiology, to other specialties.

Hey Juan, you must have attended Wayne State. Seems like they are the only ones around here that find preceptors for you. And it is a shame to say the least. Another thought would be to go on the hospital websites, scroll through the NPs and email them to see if they are interested. It is so hard to find preceptors. My so called best friend cancelled on me a week before clnical started. Sigh. It is truly hard. I don't even start my job until July and I already had two ppl that are starting their programs ask me to precept them. It amazes me how quickly NPs forget what a struggle it was to find a site.

I was going to go to Wayne but they told me I could not start clinicals until 2012...that was in 2009. So quite naturally I did not go there, LOL. I did like that they found sites for you though. Where are you now?

Aww...too bad! We would have been in the same program. I started in they DNP program in 09, they front load the program with doctoral classes...then you do your NP classes, then you finish off with your last two semesters implementing your project.... I am on my last NP class/clinical, and I am also taking class and clinical for my clinical inquiry project.

It's OK, Michigan has other good NP programs. There were some things I didn't like about Wayne as a student. I knew I wanted ACNP and I only had Wayne and UMich Ann Arbor as available options. I'm glad I chose Wayne only because I was able to pay for school with tuition reimbursement and scholarships and not have to draw student loans. It wasn't a bad commute for grad school either and I was already working in Detroit. I moved to San Francisco in 2009 and have been doing the same type of NP work I did in Detroit. Are you at U of D?

My CIP is on enteral nutrition for critically ill adults. I already have my first DNP clinicals set up for this semester. I will be going to three sites to do clinicals (St. John Main, Henry Ford Main, and Beaumont). It's all word of mouth, and mostly people are willing to help you out. The DNP clinicals are very different from the NP clinicals...it's kind of confusing to be honest...

Yea Juan. I went to U of D. How did you guess? LOL. Finally graduated and I am so freaking happy. Studying for my boards which are coming up at the end of this month. @ DNPstudent, that would have been cool to be classmates :). I am glad to know they have you complete the Doctorate portion first and then the NP stuff. I think that is really smart. When do you finish, 2013? Not bad at all to end up coming out with your DNP. How is the program? Do you like it over there? I gotta say I was so disappointed I couldn't graduate from Wayne. I really wanted to go there. I went to U of D part time for 3 years. That was plenty for me. I have a million kids and I worked up until the last semester. So glad its all behind me. My friend is trying to encourage me to get my DNP...yikes! I can't see myself going back to school any time soon. I just want to master being a NP first and get these lovely loans paid back.
