Not enough time in the 4 hrs

Hi,

I am working at an Assisted Living place and work 4P to 8P. 4 to 5 is just hanging around.

Dinner is at 5:30, resident are taken down at 5 if needed and returned a little after 6P

Then they have bingo or something, at 6:30P that finish about 7:45P

How to you assist 10 residents with PM care and usualy at lease 2 are showers and most of them are at bingo or not ready to have PM care, that gives me only about 15 mins if I want to get out at 8P

And suggestions would be most helpfull.

Thank you in advance

Pamela C

Can you do care in the 4 - 5 block? Crank out a shower or 2?

I bribe my residents on their Bingo days ;)

Yes if you can get away with an early shower that helps a lot. Also use that hour of "hanging around" to prepare your stuff. Stock the rooms with linens, take down beds, lay out PJs and wash basins.

Can they change the time of bingo or dinner? That does seem a little unreasonable. What happens after 8pm? Does another shift come in?

Hi, They are escorted to the dining room and served dinner by a wait staff and that will not be changed. I do check on the linens and usually they are in there... But I will ask them about their bed if it alright to turn them down as they are very fussy and complain to the head nurse right away. There is another CNA that stays till 9, and a CNA, medtec is there till the 11 to 7 CNA come on.

Activities are there to stay and no way anything would change.

I am a brand new CNA and had 4 (16) hours of training, guess I did ok as I was left on my own on the fifth night.

Do you think I would get more done if I changed my hours, (if I can to 5 -9) ?

When I was training, and I did a few on my own I still got out of there after 8, really don't mind but some resident take 1/2 start to finish with shower, because they want to do most of it themselves, which is good.

They pay good money for this place and they let you know it.

Thanks

Pam

Why do you work only 4 hours anyway? That's such a short shift. If you're going to take time out of your day to get ready for work, drive there etc you may as well stay a normal 8 and get paid for it. Do they not let you work full shifts or do you have school in the way?

Thank you. I was about to ask about the very short shift myself.

I work only 4 hours there because I do home care 5 days a week from 7:30A to 1P. Wanted the experience of working in a facility, and they only offered 4 hrs 4-8 or 5-9p or full time which I could not do because of the home care client which I have been with for 3 yrs and am attached

I would do one shower before dinner & one after dinner. If your shift is short like that, you really have to hit the ground running!

wow! Only two showers? I work day shift at an LTC facility and we have about 3 hours to feed breakfast, toilet 20 people, and do 5-6 showers. Two people work each area.
