No CNA experience?

Hello!

I got my letter this month that I will be starting the nursing program in January 2008! I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. I had been on the waitlist since December of 2005. I originally thought it would be another year until I got into the program and that I could take the CNA course and get a little experience under my belt before school started, but that is not the case now. I did do a phlebotomy course and think that helped out a lot! We had to stick over 45 patients to get an A in the course. I also work in the health insurance industry, so I do know some stuff... I've also passed all the A&P's, microbiology, etc. and am now in a Pathophysiology class and Clinical Calculations class.

My question is, do you think I will be at a huge disadvantage for not being a CNA first?

I think being a CNA would be great experience for anyone going to NS. But I don't think you have to have it to do well. If it isn't a requirement for your school then you should learn everything you need to learn during your coursework.

I took the CNA class (as a requirement to apply) but I don't think I'll be able to work as a CNA before nursing school. Unless something opens up like 4 hours a month... haha. Doubtful huh??

I just finished my CNA course - I actually take the state boards tomorrow.

Perhaps it depends on where you work but from what I saw in the 2.5 weeks in the LTC, there was very little benefit and I learned very, very little that I did not already know.

Perhaps I'll change my tune but I don't really see the benefit.

Exactly.

I didn't take a CNA course at the recommendation of a nurse mentor friend. The same is true for many of the nurses here on allnurses. We've all turned out to be good nurses.

I've never regretted it - I spent that summer with my family instead.

Your question is "will it be a huge disadvantage?". I say no.

It certainly doesn't hurt anyone to do it either.
