Night shift question

Is it possible for night shift to catch up with you? I've done it for a year so far as a new BSN. I thought I was handling it well. I liked the differential, the covered shift parking lot, the pace.

But I'm back to work after four nights off. They were lousy. I was too sleepy to stay awake for more than a few hours. I missed out on some socializing. No matter how much I sleep, I can't get enough.

Sound weird to revert to anti night shift like that?

After many years of night shift I feel that I can adjust to my days off pretty good but, some weeks I just can't adjust at all. Each week is different for me, on my days off I "usually" sleep from like 1a-9a or 3a-11a but, some weeks I go to sleep early and can sleep all night and then others I can only sleep during the day. For me it all depends on my first day off when I get home from work, if I stay up all day and sleep that night I'll fall asleep at night early all week, if I come home and sleep that day then I'm stuck sleeping during the day all week. I do best if I just take a few hour nap that first day off and then try to sleep again that night. I'm worthless if I sleep all day on my days off, I can't get anything done.
