Night shift clinical

My advice for clinical in night shift. How to stay awake or plan for that day. Any help appreciated.

Thank you,

Where I went to school, we didn't have night shift clinicals, only days and evenings. What are the hours? I would suggest bringing your text books. You may have a lot of downtime, especially if you only have 1 or 2 patients. Also, read through the H&P's and familiarize yourself with commonly used medications. It would also be beneficial to ask the nurses if they need help with any tasks. Oh, and coffee is your friend!

I had night clinicals last semester. Try to rest and sleep in the morning/day before the night clinical. I would always drink coffee before the shift started and then I would have more during lunch break (They will probably have some for you there). I would recommend spending time with your nurse and helping them anyway you can. Night shifts are slower so you may be able to get to know your nurse better and who knows they might recommend you for a job opening if you make a good enough impression. Study your patients' charts, meds, and disease processes. Definitely bring study material when you have a test.

Don't be so buried in your books that you don't notice the nursing going on. When a nurse goes to answer a call light, give a med, or begin to prep someone for morning surgery or tests, be at her elbow.

That, and coffee.

I am working 11pm to 7.30 am. Had my first night shift couple of days ago. The night was not bad but as the clock started ticking at 5 am, I was just sleeping with my eyes open I think. And studying books could gave been a good idea but the orthopedic unit is a busy one. :(

I have not tried drinking energy drinks to keep myself awake yet. Should I try ;p? Coz sleeping in the day before the night shift does not work for me. I have heard that once the effect of energy drink is gone, you totally crash down. Is that true?

Thanx

Yes, you crash......nights take getting used to. Make your sleep enviorment cool, light free, phone free. Run a fan for white noise. Even if you don't sleep lie down and relax. It will refresh you.
