Hello fellow nurses! I come to you in need of some interview advice. I am a med/surg nurse of over three years now, but my career goal has always been the NICU. I finally have an interview with a NICU manager and director on Tuesday, and I AM SO NERVOUS. I want this more than anything in the world, and I want to make sure that shows in my interview. So I have been researching some common interview questions (Why this hospital? Why NICU? How have you dealt with conflict in the past? What is your biggest strength? Weakness?). Any suggestions on how to answer these questions in a way that will show them how much I want this? I'm mostly worried about getting tongue tied and saying the wrong thing because I am nervous. I KNOW this is my calling, and I KNOW I would be an asset to their unit. I just to make them know it.
Advice? Words of encouragement?

Oh kris I am so sorry I didn't catch this earlier! I'm sure you did great. I am a 58 year old retired NICU nurse. I was in the unit for OVER 20 years which is a long time in a specialty with a high burn out rate. You sound just like me over 20 years ago. I loved every second i was in that unit and I knew, absolutely knew it was where I belonged.
I would love to hear how you knocked the interview out of the park! Hopefully I can be one of the first to congratulate you on your new career. I promise you will always be thinking, never be bored, always be learning....and the families...if you love teaching and working with families this is for you.
When I first started we did not have an MD on site 24 hours....senior nurses were certified in needle chest aspiration, intubation, UAC/UVC placement.
Every high risk delivery was new and exciting. We had to transport infants from neighboring communities into the unit for care. Air and ground transport with a respiratory therapist. kris you have the nursing world by the nuts....go for it kiddo. You will never regret it
Again I would love to hear from you!
