New nurse

Published

Hi there,i have a question regarding if it is possible to move from a home health RN to a med/surg RN in a hospital. The reason i am asking this is because i arrived to this country recently and obtained my license and now i am looking for a job and i am getting a few positive feedback from that particular field, but my objective is to work in a hospital. I would apareciste some guidance.

From what I am seeing and hearing it is difficult to make that transition. I have been trying for two years now. It come down to being rejected from the new grad programs due to too much experience and not enough experience for a med surg. At this point take what you get, some of my classmates still haven't found job after 3 years. I guess it also depends on your location and your willingness to more.

Best of luck!!!

I haven't tried myself but I've known a few nurses now who've made the transition easily. One into pediatrics and the others into med surg. I guess it just depends! Some of our local hospitals will still put you through the new grad program if you haven't had any hospital experience, even if you're 1-2 years into home health.

I worked as a home health LPN than RN for about a year, then switched to med-surg. I didn't have problems, any more than I think any other nurse would have. Our hospital had a pretty good orientation program, though, which definitely made that easier. Med-surg is just a crazy beast got anyone to tackle, and I think having some experience already in general worked in my favor, even in an unrelated focus.
