new job

After a year of working on a med/surg floor I interviewed at a new hospital in a bigger city.... Found out yesterday that I got a SICU job in an excellent hospital. The floor I am on presently is very understaffed we work 4 12's every other week with a load of 8 to 10 pt. Anyway told my boss this morning about the job, gave 30 days notice (hospital policy) and she wigged. Apparently you should tell your manager if you are even looking for a new job. They could have looked for more people to hire if they knew I was leaving, I gave 30 days notice. My question is: 1: do you tell your boss if you are looking for a new job, I'd never heard of that before and 2: is 30 days the norm for a notice of leave? Thanks

That is terrible your boss acted like that. It sucks when you have to leave to better yourself. I felt kind of bad last time I left. Usually I have seen two weeks notice depending on your contract. So they should be lucky it is 30 days. From a business side you don't have to tell your boss anything about finding a new job. I hope this helps.

Take care,

Robert

No, you should not have to tell your boss if you are even looking for a new job. You gave more than adequate notice and you were compliant with policy. It doesn't even sound like your current position is safe - 8-10 patients on a med/surg floor? That would scare the heck out of me.

Congratulations on your new position! I'm sure it will be a much better working environment.

my facility requires a three week notice. from what i have seen anywhere from two to four weeks is the standard.

as far as notifying your manager that you are looking for another job is absurd. i do not know of any professional that doesn't keep their eyes and ears open as to what is out there. you never know when you will find a freat opportunity and whether you are actively looking or not is your business.

the reason facilities require a notice of resignation is so they can attempt to find your replacement before your last day. i guess i kind of thought this was a "no brainer"!

p.s. good luck in your new position!

you gave the notice that your hospital requires. you don't need to let anyone know that you are looking for a new job. that's rediculous. don't worry, i'm sure that she is mad that a good nurse is leaving.

:balloons: good luck in the new job!!!:balloons:
