New job paperwork

I am starting next week on an ortho floor finally. I'm from the US and moved to NS in Sept last year. I am wondering about the paperwork. In the US we have tax forms called a W-2 that we fill out and we have some determination as to how much we have taken out. I don't want to end up owing at the end of the year.

So how do I do the paperwork so I don't owe taxes and preferably have a small return?

I'm married and my husband is self employed how does that work on taxes? do I need to make any adjustments?

About how big of a chunk is taken out in income taxes? The US is different in that we have a lot of little chunks that add up to about 40-50% of your check if your single. I'm making over 30% more than what I made in the US.

I'm really excited about the job ..... I've not had this much enthusiasm over nursing in a long time. I think the break really helped. I just hope I passed CRNE's I felt pretty good about the exam when I left.

The HR dept at your hospital handles all the tax paperwork. It is usually done the first week during orientation. If unsure ask, they will tell you which box to tick and forms to sign.

Self employed taxes are really out of my realm. A co-worker's husband has his own business and has an accountant do it. For some reason I think he pays taxes quarterly.

In Ontario, small business taxes are paid out quarterly, however my parents own a business and they had an accountant show them how to do their tax payments but the accountant does their yearly personal income taxes. I have done my taxes myself, tried using a non tax accountant and finally started using a tax accountant and ended up getting the largest refund using the tax accountant. Best of luck whatever you do.
