Hi all! I have been to this forum several times and registered today. I am a nursing student hopeful, for Summer, 2009. I have to take the placement exam in January. I am HORRIBLE in math!! So, I'm completley terrified that this is going to hinder me. The requirements for the LPN program I hope to get into is Math 116 (Applications).. Of course, Reading score of 76 or higher as well. I'm 24, and I've had to put off school for so long, due to death of a family member. I'm determined not to do this any longer. I worked in Hospice care for two years as a HHA/CNA and my dream is to be a Hospice nurse. I don't have a "back-up" career.. LOL. I know this is my calling.
I'm hoping some of my fellow "math haters" out there can give me some encouragement, especially if you're in a nursing program. :)

Gemini - Sorry to hear about your family member. I actually just experienced the same thing. I'm currently an LPN, and in school for my RN, hoping to graduate in Spring '09. I am an "older" student, and when starting LPN, faced the same math challenge. There are great reference books out there, I'm sure, but I needed some hands-on practice.
I contacted my local Board of Education, and they happened to have some classes actually geared towards nursing entrance test math!! Perhaps you could check the same. They also offered brush-ups on reading/comprehension. I felt so much more confident taking my entrance test after that...don't think I would have passed had I not attended those classes.
Hope that helps a little. Best of luck to you, and to your future. It takes a very special person to become a hospice nurse....go for it!!:wink2:
Hi. It's just the general Compass entrance exam. I'm attending a Tech. College.. and the best thing about this school, is there are no waiting lists. You pass Math 116 and your Compass reading, and your in the nursing program. Of course, they only offer LPN, but that is great for right now. :)

Thank you so much for your encouraging words! :) My aunt is a Hospice RN in Florida, and she loves it. My grandmother (her mother) had Hospice care, and it touched our lives. My mother is a Therapist, so I guess it just runs through the veins.
I'm actually studying Elementary Algebra, just to freshen up.. people can laugh, but I'm doing everything I can to be prepared. Thank you again, and good luck to you in your nursing adventures!
Gemini-Sounds like Hospice nursing is right for you, since it runs in the veins-LOL. I work on the Oncology floor, and occasionally Hospice overlaps with some of our patients. It is truly a special place for those willing and qualified. I always say, with Hospice nursing....it's a calling, not just a profession.
Sounds like if you are brushing up on the algebra, you will be alright. Most of what I remember about the entrance math was fractions and percentages. The rest of it really is ok for those that graduated high school, with any Algebra at all. Since I am older, I did not have Algebra, so found it a little more challenging. I have since had to pass College Algebra (with an A), and considered it a miracle!!!
Good luck to you, Gemini. You'll do great!
