New Grad RN

Published

Starting my nurse residency program in 2 weeks and I'd like to know what is expected of new graduate nurse? I am having terrible anxiety. I spend most nights watching YouTube videos and reviewing material.

I have never started an IV before. There are also some skills that never presented themselves in nursing school. I did an accelerated ADN program, that I felt prepared me for NCLEX, but not necessarily to be an RN.

I have been a CNA for about a year. But I know I am lacking in some nursing skills.

as a new grad nurse, what is my preceptor expecting from me? Should I be able to pass meds, chart proficienctly, and nursing skills the first day? Or are the first few days for shadowing?

thanks

Serious question ....because I always wonder when I see these types of posts. If you're a CNA, don't you have a pretty decent idea? ...or at least work with nurses that you could talk to about their experiences?

I just would like to know what is expected of me within the first few days and weeks of orientation. I have seen and worked with nurses as a CNA, yes. But I also know that the job I have done as a CNA is different from what RNs do. We work alongside each other but its much different. Transitioning from CNA to RN is odd for me.I know what my duties will be, roughly. But my question is really, what does a preceptor expect from a new grad within the first few weeks.

I have been out of work for a few months since graduation. I was caring for my dad and helping him through hospice and transitioning. So it's been awhile and I'm no longer in contact with old coworkers.

Maybe I just work with very chatty CNA nursing students. Or maybe I'm the chatty one. In any case, what's expected will vary a bit from place to place and person to person. Day one may be observation, or they may give you patients of your own to handle under supervision ...or anything in between. You may even be in a classroom for the first week(s). The most important thing anywhere is that you steadily and safely progress.
